As part of our partnership with Porirua City Council and Ngāti Toa Rangatira on the Streamside Planting Programme, we invite you to join us on Saturday 9  July for a community planting day in Waitangirua, within Belmont Regional Park. The Streamside Planting Programme is set to transform the health of our waterways and Te Awarua-o-Porirua harbour, and this is the first public planting since its launch – so we’d love to have you with us.

We will be planting on Greater Wellington Regional Council land that has recently been retired from grazing, and the community group Ngahere Korowai want to see the local community help transform the hills around Porirua East into a Ngahere Korowai – a cloak of native forest. Come get involved!

How to get there: head to 44 Waihora Cres, and find a park either next to the sports field or on the road. – We’ll meet from 9.30 am and head down into the gully to begin planting – look out for the Sustainable Coastlines and Porirua City flags and friendly helpers in high-vis gear.

What does the day involve?

9:30 am – Registration opens at Belmont Stockyards, Waitangirua, Tea and coffee served.

9:45 am – Blessing by Ngāti Toa, opening words from Sustainable Coastlines/Porirua City Council and others.

10:00 am – Safety briefing and planting demonstration. Planting begins!

12:30 pm – Return to home base for kai, refreshments and group photo.

13:15 EXTRA TIME –  For those who wish to stay longer, we will continue planting until pack-up at 2pm  (tree dependent).
