About the Litter Intelligence Programme

Working in collaboration with the Ministry for the Environment, Statistics New Zealand and the Department of Conservation, we have developed a national beach litter monitoring programme that will enable us to build an accurate picture of the beach litter problem in New Zealand and help to prioritise solutions.

By working to a United Nations Environment Program survey methodology, the data is collected at the highest standard of scientific rigour, allowing it to be used for national, regional and international reporting, including progress against UN Sustainable Development Goals.

To collect the beach litter data long-term, we work with community groups & organisations to conduct beach litter surveys across Aotearoa at least four times per year. We provide the training and tools required to take part in this project as Citizen Scientists, conducting regular litter surveys at their chosen local beach sites and loading the litter data into a new, easy to use nationwide beach litter Citizen Science Platform/App we’ve developed specifically for the project. The Litter Intelligence litter data base also includes a solutions data base and some awesome litter data visualisation tools that are in development at present. All the litter data collected is freely available to the groups involved as well as to the wider public and decision makers.

Event impacts

We thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Mother of All Clean Ups event 2023.

In total, 60 volunteers removed 13 full sacks/ 650 litres of litter from the coastline – an amazing effort by everyone. From chairs to cigarette butts, a body board to a toy calculator there was quite an array of items out there!

The data from the Litter Intelligence survey can be found here: Litter Intelligence – New Brighton Beach – 13th May

Survey results of note:

– 478 items were categorised, counted and weighed

– Litter density (379 Items per 1,000m2) is higher than the national average.

– Plastic was by far the most prominent material type – 92%

– Excluding unidentifiable items, the most common items found were cigarette butss, polystyrene and rope.

Those numbers contributed to the wider Mother of all Clean Ups event totals – 543 enthusiastic volunteers removed 438 bags of rubbish, weighing more than 2370kg, from our awa and moana in a single morning. A great achievement that comes with the reminder that there are still steps we can take to reduce pollution in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Thank you to the Mother of All Clean Ups organising committee, the 60 community groups and 20 schools who rolled up their sleeves and helped to clean-up the environment!

We are stoked to be running the beach clean station  again this year at New Brighton. We will be sending volunteers to clean up different spots along the beach from Southshore Spit to north of the Pier.
