Wednesday 24 February saw 34 people join Jamie McDell, singer and songwriter, and event partners Contiki to take a trip out to Motuihe Island for a beach clean-up and BBQ lunch, followed by an intimate acoustic gig from Jamie.

Volunteers met at Sustainable Coastlines’ The Flagship Education Hub for a presentation about plastic pollution and marine debris given by Sustainable Coastline’s Ryley Webster, and were gifted a reusable metal water bottle, thanks to Contiki.

After boarding the Fullers ferry from downtown Auckland we arrived at Motuihe Island, where we were met by Department of Conservation rangers Dave and Pio for a briefing on the restoration and ecology work being carried out on the island.

After a snack of All Good Bananas and Whittaker’s Chocolate santé bars (unwrapped, of course!) we split into two groups to hit the coastlines.

Volunteers then hit the beach, gathering 200 litres / 25 kg of rubbish in little over an hour, the majority of which was single-use food packaging, including straws and lollipop sticks. Volunteers were astounded at the number of nurdles, (pre-production plastic pellets) which were found all over the island. This led to some great discussions about single use plastic packaging and how we can make more responsible choices.

At 1pm, volunteers headed for the shade for a delicious BBQ lunch, with tea and Eighthirty coffee. Volunteers spent the afternoon swimming and investigating the rubbish collected from the beach before returning to The Flagship to eat some more chocolate and listen to Jamie sing.

“It was the best day of my life,” said one of the volunteers.

A huge thank you must go to the staff at Contiki for enabling this event; to Fullers for their support with ferry logistics; to Jamie for her passion and using her voice for a purpose; Panuku Development Auckland for hosting us in Wynyard Quarter, and to Mathias Godert from the Wooden Spoon Daily for his epic BBQ lunch.

Further thanks to All Good Bananas and Whittaker’s Chocolate for providing delicious sustenance to our clean-up crew, and Madeleine De Young for her photos (@madicattt).

Click here to view Contiki Story Tellers tag board to see more photos of the event.

Join Sustainable Coastlines, Contiki and Jamie McDell for a day out on Motuihe Island, followed by an acoustic gig with Jamie McDell at The Flagship Education Hub. Please note this event is R18 so leave the kids at home.

Meet at The Flagship Education Hub for a presentation about plastic pollution and a health and safety briefing, before we ride the Fullers ferry to Motuihe Island for a beach clean up and a BBQ lunch. We’ll return to Auckland at 3.00pm for a private acoustic gig with Jamie McDell.

When: Wednesday 24 February, 9.15am – 5.00pm

Where: Meet at The Flagship Education Hub, corner Halsey and Jellicoe St, opposite the ASB Building in the Wynyard Quarter.

Ticket cost: Free. All attendees must register using the form below.

What to bring:

  • Sturdy shoes: this area has some challenging coastal terrain. You’ll need closed-toe, sturdy shoes (such as sneakers, sports shoes or tramping boots).
  • Warm and waterproof clothes: NZ weather is unpredictable. Bring at least one warm top layer and a rain jacket.
  • Sun hat and sun cream.
  • Reusable water bottle (filled-up and ready to go).
  • Packed lunch and snacks.
  • Camera (optional) – this is a unique and beautiful location and we’d love to see your photos. Use #loveyourcoast on social media or email to [email protected]

You will be briefed in health and safety considerations on the day, and will need to sign a health and safety form before we head off to Motuihe Island.

Huge thanks to Fullers for their support with ferry logistics, and to Panuku Development Auckland for hosting us in the Wynyard Quarter.

The Rocking Roller-Coasters

A group of 5 time-travelling musicians who have landed in Tamaki Makaurau, Aotearoa, with the mission of transporting it’s inhabitants, through music, back to the golden age of 1950s rock ‘n’ roll and 60s pop. They possess the magic blend of being sophisticated enough to be genuinely into music that’s before their parents time, and still having the youthful exuberance to pull it off. The result is a full dance floor that spans every generation in the room. Bring your dancing shoes. Check them out here.

Carlee Rhodes

Carlee Rhodes play a fresh New Zealand take on musical styles out of the Southern US. Mixing genres ranging from soul and blues to country and rock n’ roll, their diverse and energetic set of upbeat and slower-tempo originals has been capturing crowds at venues and festivals throughout the country. Fronted by the soulful Carlee Atkin, the five-piece band’s original sound is influenced by a 1970s Fender Rhodes keyboard which has been passed down through generations of Atkins.

A huge thank you to all 350 attendees of our sold-out fundraising ball at the Auckland Hilton on Saturday 29 August. Together, we managed to raise a record-breaking $46,334 for our cause!

To our generous sponsors and to all those who kindly provided auction items, thank you. To our brilliant entertainers, The Rocking Roller-Coasters, Carlee Rhodes, Peter Urlich, MC Clarke Gayford, DJ Murry Sweetpants, kia ora. To Kurt McManus Photography for your photographic prowess and to Sabine Davison for your auctioneering expertise, cheers.

Thank you to the brilliant Hilton staff for once again providing this fantastic venue. Special thanks to our partners Benefitz, Singapore Airlines and Samsung for your dedicated support. Finally, to our event planning gurus Murry, Jodi and the Sweetpants whanau, we love you guys and you have been absolutely legendary yet again. Sustainable Coastlines has partnered with Phoenix Organics on The Love Project, a project to find out which coasts we love the most. People across the country have voted for their favourite beach, and the soon-to-be-announced winner will receive a clean-up from our crew this summer.

Earlier this year, artists Mica Still, Meghan Geliza and Mulga worked to craft limited edition Love Project labels for the Phoenix Organics drinks range. Now that the project is in its final weeks, we want to show off the artists and their masterpieces and give you one last chance to cast your votes.

This Saturday 8 November, from 12 noon to 4pm, The Love Project comes to central Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter, outside Silo 6. Get on down to visit the Sustainable Coastlines and Phoenix Organics crew and watch artists Mica Still and Meghan Geliza create epic, large scale versions of their artworks onto upcycled artboards, made with love from old wooden shipping pallets.

While you’re witnessing the live art show, explore Sustainable Coastlines’ Education Station, learn more about looking after the places we love, and try your hand at our popular ‘Chocolate Fishing’ game. This is also one of your last chances to vote for a clean-up of your favourite stretch of sand on our purpose-built Love Project beach map.

Phoenix will be providing organic refreshments and spot prizes throughout the event, and our friends from George FM will be there with sweet beats all afternoon. We’ll even bring the bean bags, so come down and lounge around in the wonderful surrounds of the Wynyard Quarter.

Event Details

From 23 February to 6 March our team delivered our proven ‘Love your Coast’ educational presentation to schools from both Waiheke Island and South Auckland and coordinated nine clean-ups on Waiheke Island. These events involved over 400 students from six South Auckland schools as well as kids from Waiheke High School, Waiheke Playcentre and the Kiwi Conservation Club.

Through this project we enabled 294 students from Manukau Harbour-based schools the opportunity to travel to Waiheke Island; a special experience for all. For many this was the first time they had been on a boat and for some, this was the first time they had been to the beach. This was an extremely impactful learning opportunity for the students and a highly rewarding experience for all involved.

By working with Year 9 students from the Sustainability Team from Waiheke High School as youth leaders and hosts for some of the South Auckland-based schools we were able to provide an even richer learning experience and a great opportunity to collaborate.

Our project finale — a huge community clean-up on Saturday 8 March — saw over 200 volunteers and 16 boats turn-up to clean-up the island. In all over the two week project, 607 volunteers were involved in the Love your Coast Waiheke Island clean-up events and 1,240 students received our educational presentation. Volunteers removed 18,000 litres (1,580 kilograms) of rubbish from Waiheke’s coastlines: equivalent to well over half of a shipping container worth of litter!

This rubbish was then sorted and categorised with the assistance of Department of Corrections Community Probation Service workers at The Concourse transfer station in West Auckland, an effort that provided critical understanding of the worst offending products and allowed us to separate materials for artwork projects and recycling. A full breakdown of the results is provided in our project report, which can be downloaded through the link at the right hand side of this page.

We ran workshops with 55 from Waiheke High and Primary Schools to create an artwork from rubbish which was unveiled at the Waiheke Jazz Festival on April 19, along with a percussion “set” performed on instruments made from coastal debris by William Ricketts and Chris O’Connor from indie rock band Phoenix Foundation.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone who took part in this project; we truly were impressed with the results.

Thanks to our sponsors

A huge thank you to all of the awesome organisations that have supported this event: without you we simply could not make this event happen. Thanks to Benefitz, Bayleys, Keen Footwear, Auckland Council, Sealink, LUSH, Kwik-N-Ezy, Seaweek, Carlton Party Hire, The Bay, Ceres Organics and the Waiheke Island Jazz Festival. A special thanks to Sarah at Ocean Aware for helping us pull this event together.

Event follow-up

Following the clean-up activities all rubbish will be counted and categorised to create powerful data proving which materials and products are the worst offenders and providing interesting statistics for media. Materials separated will also be put aside for school students to create artworks out of the rubbish. The entire project will be filmed and edited into a short film that will be displayed, along with the final artwork produced out of rubbish from the clean-up, at the Waiheke Jazz Festival from 19-21 April 2014, similar to our trash-to-art project displayed during Art in the Dark in November 2013.

Dec 2013

On Saturday 14 December we invite you, your family and friends to attend a celebration as the finale to our huge Love your Coast Wellington project. Thousands of volunteers across the Wellington region are joining forces to look after our coasts during our five-week-long project; certainly an effort worth celebrating.

Please join us for special (and free) outdoor screening of dramatic award-winning film Planet Ocean at Waitangi Park on Wellington’s waterfront, starting once darkness falls at 8.30pm.

The celebration promises to be a treat for the whole family, with kids’ games, kite-making workshops and a gold-coin donation sausage sizzle at Waitangi Park from 1pm.

Planet Ocean is a 90 minute film directed by world-acclaimed photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand and Michael Pitiot. This incredible cinema adventure brought along a unique pool of researchers, oceanographers and biologists, and with astonishing photography, this film takes us on a magnificent and unprecedented journey into the heart of the least known regions of our planet. The film narrates the most marvelous and also the most terrifying human experiences of our time. Filmed in extreme geographical conditions all over the globe, it describes the modern Odyssey of people who go out to discover their blue planet.

Sustainable Coastlines in collaboration with Art In The Dark presents New Light, a new creative project for 2013.

Art in the Dark is New Zealand’s premier light art festival that transforms Auckland’s Western Park into an illuminated buzzing hub of activity with over 40,000 visitors. The park is lit up with over 30 art works ranging from installations, projections and performances to large-scale immersive experiences that are powered with clean energy and are made from recycled, renewable and sustainable materials.

In conjunction with the event each year, there is also an environmental education programme run in local primary schools. Kids get to learn about how they can help the environment while creating an artwork that is displayed at the event for the whole community to enjoy.

This year for the environmental education program in schools, we are collaborating with Art In The Dark and renowned local artist Alexander Bartleet to raise awareness of the problem of litter in the marine environment. At Sustainable Coastlines, we are devoted to educating people about the challenges of rubbish in our local environment. Art In The Dark is a great opportunity to run educational programs and creative projects around the issues of marine debris.

A limited number of lucky schools will get the chance to be involved in this amazing educational experience, visit Rangitoto Island, and be part of creating an epic installation that will be unveiled and displayed in Western Park at the Art in the Dark event this November.

Project Details

During the first two weeks of term four, Sustainable Coastlines and the Art in the Dark team will visit the participating schools and host fun, inspiring and interactive lessons educating students about the threat of plastic in our oceans.

There is an opportunity for the children to see the reality of the problem first hand and help to do something about it by visiting Rangitoto Island, courtesy of Fullers, and participate in a beach clean-up.

Next it will be the kids’ turn to educate and inspire the wider community to rethink the consumption and disposal of everyday plastic items by creating an art installation made from the rubbish they collect at Rangitoto and using other forms of waste shown in a new light.

The concept of the installation is to create a large creature-like structure that will be put together like a jigsaw from the different pieces created individually by each school.

Each of the participating schools will create their own unique part of the puzzle – a 3-dimensional shape collaged with plastic – which will be joined together to form a mystery structure/creature that will be unveiled at Art in the Dark from 7 to 9 November, 2013.

Sony prizes will be awarded in different categories for the schools that create the most impressive pieces.

If your school would like to take part in this incredible project, or if you would like more information please contact [email protected] as soon as possible to see if we can get you or your school involved.

A huge and heartfelt thanks to all that came. We had a damn fine time and hope you all did too. Together we managed to raise over $27,000 in critical funding to allow us to continue our work on educational programmes, coastal clean-ups and waterway planting projects. To our generous sponsors, all those who kindly donated auction items (and all those who won them), thank you. To our brilliant entertainers Nairobi Trio, Latinaotearoa, Sal Valentine & the Babyshakes, DJ R.I.A., MC Clarke Gayford, DJ Sambora, Benn Morrison, and Sunshine Sound System, kia ora. To photographer Barnaby Sweet and auctioneer Sabine Davison, cheers. Thank you to the dedicated Hilton staff for once again providing the fantastic venue. Finally, to our volunteer event planning gurus Murry, Jodi and the von Sweetpants whanau, we love you guys. Without you all, this evening would not have been possible.

All ticket sales along with live and silent auction packages (check out the catalogue here) up for grabs during the evening will raise funds for our ongoing work motivating and educating communities to look after our coastlines.

This will be the night out to celebrate the winter’s end and ring-in spring. Strictly R18, sorry kids.
