Sustainable Coastlines and Conservation Volunteers NZ have partnered up to deliver a huge community clean-up day across Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt, thanks to Hutt City Council. Join us for the inaugural Clean Up the Hutt event on Saturday, 13 December 2025!
Come along to be part of this massive community day, spanning the coastline as well as inland sites to stop the litter getting to the beach in the first place. We’ll provide everything you need to clean up, plus prizes, Phoenix Organics drinks, kai, and good vibes.
Everyone is welcome to this free, weekend event — families looking for a fun day out with the kids, individuals wanting to meet likeminded people, colleagues looking to use that volunteer day, or groups of mates keen to get their hands dirty. We’re all there for the same reason: to protect the places we love.

Are you interested in taking action against ocean pollution at your local coastline?
Come along to Petone Beach on Sunday, 14 April for a beach clean-up and Litter Intelligence survey. Give back to the beautiful moana by learning to be a citizen scientist — set up and run a survey, sort and record rubbish in an audit, and add your data to Litter Intelligence, Aotearoa New Zealand’s national database and solutions platform.
We’ll start from 1:30pm, heading onto the beach for the survey, then ending with the audit. All equipment will be provided, including gloves, sacks, and a health and safety briefing.
Please register below! This helps us with event planning, and allows us to contact you if there are any important event announcements or major changes. We will get in touch with you with further details on logistics for the day.

Nau mai haere mai, we can’t wait to see you there!
What an epic day out! We saw people from all walks of life come along to protect the ocean they love — community groups, school kids, businesses and locals. More than 230 enthusiastic volunteers cleaned up 5.9km of coastline, collecting 5,300 litres of litter 💪 Fantastic mahi!

We hope you’ll come celebrate Seaweek and get stuck in to clean Petone beach and the surrounding coastline!
Our generous partner Hirepool wants cleaner coastlines for us all, so we will be working with local community groups to have the biggest possible impact on cleaning up the rubbish found in and around the beach.
On the day there we will have a main base camp set up at Hīkoikoi Reserve, with shuttles running volunteers to the other end of the beach. Volunteers will sign-in, pick-up gear, be given a briefing and then head out to clean an area of the beach. We want to make the biggest impact possible and clean every corner of the beach!
Everything will be provided including health and safety preparation, equipment and refreshments. Whether you’re up for a light stroll or getting dirty and wet, all hands are needed, so we hope you’ll register now and to see you there!
Timing:
10:00am – Sign in at Sustainable Coastlines gazebo
10:15am – Welcome and Health and Safety Brief
10:30am – Clean-up commences
12:30pm – Return from clean-up for lunch
1:00pm – Event Ends
A huge thank you to Hirepool for enabling this event, and the ongoing efforts of the Petone community to clean their local coastline.
