Papakōwhai ANZ Planting Day 1 | Sustainable Coastlines

Event impacts

This was the first planting of the new financial year and we had an awesome day combining our community planting day with Paremata School, community members and even the police!

A big thank you to ANZ and Wellington Community Trust for sponsoring the event and for the collaboration of Porirua City Council. Again thank you to all who got stuck in, especially on the harder banks where dedicated locals rallied to get the final plants in! We’re looking forward to continuing to work together at planting days next year.

Join us for a Professional Development workshop on March 2nd, at the Flagship Education Centre, Auckland Central. Made possible by Auckland Council’s Waste Minimisation and Innovation Fund.

Our  Litter Intelligence Education Programme (LIEP) is an intensive programme which focuses on building learners’ connection to nature by first engaging them in our citizen science project (involving beach litter surveys and audits), and then, through a learning journey, implores them to create an action to combat a litter issue in their community – and beyond!

Over the course of the day, you will participate in this experiential learning approach through the eyes of the learners’, connecting with like-minded educators to complete mini environmental challenges.

Please contact Becky at [email protected] with any queries.

Event impacts

This was the final planting event for the year as we move into hotter summer conditions and what an impactful way to wrap up the planting season!

We had 45 people contributing to the planting of just over 2000 plants in Papakōwhai Reserve in Porirua where Paremata and Papakōwhai school had also previously contributed to the planting of natives. Most attendees live locally and can now watch as the natives planted in the tidal zone and surrounding banks grow into maturity like the surrounding established kōwhai and mānuka trees.

Event postponed.

Thanks for your interest in attending! As you’ll be aware, due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, no public events can take place, so this event has been postponed until further notice. If you’ve already registered, we’ll send you an email to update you once we have a new date or if we have to cancel the planting. We’ll also update our events page and social channels with new announcements.

We need nature and nature needs us, so we’re looking forward to seeing you at our next planting event and getting those seedlings into the ground!

Event impacts

Its always difficult to perfectly plan how many trees will be planted at each planting, and when Auckland Council needed help to plant their final 3,000 trees, along with our sponsor Corona, we leapt into action.

Again this day was a collaboration with Kara and Auckland Council, and supported by Mayor’s Million Trees Programme.

The 3,000 trees were infilling an old planting site planted four years ago, which unfortunately had some inquisitive sheep sneak through a culvert and munch some of our trees a few years back. Most of the trees were canopy trees. The already established manuka and ti kouka trees give protection from the elements to help these larger but more fragile trees have a better chance to grow.

Local group Shah Satnam Ji Green S Welfare Force Wing provided an awesome vegan curry and chai tea to reward the 100 hard working volunteers.

Thanks to all those who came out to help on the day, see you at the next one!

About the Litter Intelligence Programme

Working in collaboration with the Ministry for the Environment, Statistics New Zealand and the Department of Conservation, we have developed a national beach litter monitoring programme that will enable us to build an accurate picture of the beach litter problem in New Zealand and help to prioritise solutions.

By working to a United Nations Environment Program survey methodology, the data is collected at the highest standard of scientific rigour, allowing it to be used for national, regional and international reporting, including progress against UN Sustainable Development Goals.

To collect the beach litter data long-term, we work with community groups & organisations to conduct beach litter surveys across Aotearoa at least four times per year. We provide the training and tools required to take part in this project as Citizen Scientists, conducting regular litter surveys at their chosen local beach sites and loading the litter data into a new, easy-to-use nationwide beach litter Citizen Science Platform/App we’ve developed specifically for the project. The Litter Intelligence litter database also includes a solutions data base and some awesome litter data visualisation tools that are in development at present. All the litter data collected is freely available to the groups involved as well as to the wider public and decision-makers.

Come along on Saturday 30th October with friends, family and colleagues to help plant some native trees and protect our precious waterways.

After an awesome effort from volunteers last year to get 1500 plants in the ground, we are returning to check on how they are doing and plant the next section of the waterway. The site is a great area for riparian planting because it is situated on a working farm in Motumaoho that backs onto a stream which eventually leads to the Waitakaruru River. Planting here will build a strong barrier to prevent run off from the farm entering the water, improve the soil and air quality and bring back native wildlife to the area.

We’ll be starting from 10:00 am and finishing up around 2 pm.

You can stay for as little or as long as you like, but around noon we’ll all come together for some refreshing Phoenix Organics Drinks.

If you’d like to come along, even if it’s just for a couple of hours, please register online so you don’t miss out.

We look forward to seeing you there.
