Celebrate Seaweek 2024 with BLAKE, Sustainable Coastlines and the Christchurch City Council – this event is not to be missed!

We will all meet at the Sumner Surf Life Saving Club at 9:45 am. Our first activity will take us to the coastline; after that, we will return to the surf club for the remainder of the day -finishing at 12:30 pm. This is an indoor & outdoor event.

Following on from your rocky shore exploration with Christchurch City Council, you will be taking action to protect the marine environment from pollution with Sustainable Coastlines. Help to count, categorise, and weigh litter collected from a section of coastline as part of the Litter Intelligence program. This data will then help to inform solutions to pollution! Sustainable Coastlines will also be running a turtle obstacle course celebrating navigating the challenges and wonder of the ocean!

Top the afternoon off by experiencing the wonder of Aotearoa’s ocean environment through virtual reality with BLAKE.

This is a weekend event, so don’t be shy, grab your whānau, a mate (or two!) and give back to our beautiful moana.

On the day there will be a sign-in station where volunteers will pick up gear, be given a briefing and then head out for a beach clean-up, litter survey and audit. You will also have a chance to learn about the significance of the area for bird biodiversity and the importance of pest control. Afterwards, we’ll celebrate our mahi with music, games and Phoenix Organics drinks.

Please bring along any old mobile phones you have for recycling!

To reduce harmful emissions from exhausts and brake and tyre wear that impact on our coastlines we encourage you to consider travelling to this event by;

  • Walking or riding a bike. The site is located on a walking and cycling path and valet bike parking will be provided.
  • Public transport. The event is easily reached by bus – Stop 5077 or 5093. Plan your trip with the Auckland Transport Journey Planner.
