A huge thank you

Our second annual tree planting at the Anzac Parade Drive was a huge success.

We planted over 1,000 trees along the stream as a Mahinga Kai Exemplar!

A huge thanks to, John Skilton of Travis Wetland, Kathryn Bates from the Avon / Otakaro Network and Georgie Hart of Million Metres for pulling this great collaborative event together.  By crowd funding through the Million Metres organisation the Avon / Otakaro Group are able to upscale their activities and we hope to do it all again next year.

Special thanks to Teoti for our Karakia and giving us a moment to breathe and giving us perspective of this special place.

We had over 250 volunteers today, including three local schools – Shirley Boys, Avonside Girls, and Waitakiri School. Our sponsors were also on the ground, with volunteers from Singapore Airlines mucking in. Thanks also to Phoenix Drinks and eighthirty coffee who kept us refreshed through the day.

For the Christchurch portion of this year’s Love your Water program we’re partnering with the Million Metres Streams Project, as we need more funds to make planting day as successful as possible. We need support for this project! Please click here to help crowdfund this project

The Avon-Ōtākaro Network is lovingly overlooking the restoration of Anzac Drive Reserve, as the Mahinga Kai Exemplar, in partnership with Ngāi Tahu, and support from Ngāi Tūāhuriri, Department of Conservation and Christchurch City Council. We invite you to join us for a fun day of tree planting at the Anzac Drive Reserve, near Travis Wetland at 10am on Friday 29 July 2016.

Last year we had a fantastic time with local schools and community members.  This year we’re planning on putting even more trees in the ground with your help.

Simply meet from 9.00am at Corserland Street on the west side of Anzac Drive Reserve. Look for our blue Sustainable Coastlines flags. Although LINZ has put a barrier across Norcross Street, you have permission to drive up around the edge to get around it. Alternatively just park on Brooker Ave and walk across the grass to the planting site.

We’ll be starting from 9.00am and continue until around 4.00pm, or whenever we get the trees in the ground. You can stay for as little or as long as you like, but we’ll have coffee and refreshments from Phoenix Drinks.

Volunteers, corporate groups and schools are all welcome to come along and get your hands dirty and plant new native trees to help the regeneration of this special reserve. And remember – to make this event possible we need your help to fund this project. To volunteer please register through the quick form below.
