Our impacts | Sustainable Coastlines

Summary

To help us understand what sort of solutions are working and where, we track and measure all of our impacts. Because of the collaborative nature of our organisation — we work with community groups, schools and businesses — the figures below are not ours alone but instead show the combined results of our efforts. ‘Delivered’ impacts are from activities led by our team, while 'Enabled’ impacts are from activities led by people or groups that we provided with significant support.

Clean-up activities

Since 2008 we have coordinated and supported clean-up activities on beaches, waterways and public spaces. We remove litter from our environment while giving clean-up volunteers valuable hours connecting with outdoor spaces and engaging in positive solutions for their community.

Presentations and training

We invest significant effort in delivering education programmes aimed at changing behaviour to reduce litter and freshwater pollution. And, to maximise our impact, we also run training workshops in event management, presentation delivery and other core skills to enable others to deliver our events and education messages far and wide.

Litter Intelligence

Through our newest programme, Litter Intelligence, we train Citizen Scientists around Aotearoa to collect detailed litter data from their local stretch of coastline. Our trusty monitoring groups survey the beach, then sort the litter found into over 100 categories, following a rigorous United Nations Environment Programme methodology. The resulting data gives us a strong understanding of which types of material and products pollute the most and — most importantly — helps us to make better decisions to solve this problem.

Location of our impacts

Our team delivers our Love Your Coast, Love Your Water and Litter Intelligence programmes in communities around the country. We have staff based in Auckland, Gisborne and Wellington, but we work nationwide. To spread our impacts far and wide, we also have an increasing network of ambassadors, interns and volunteers in locations across the country. Browse the map below to see where and when we deliver our core activities.
