We’re sharing this whakataukī today (a favourite of ours!) for World Environmental Health Day as a reminder that when we take care of the environment, it takes care of us🌴🌊🌏

From our air to our food and water, the environment surrounding us affects our quality of life in countless ways. Our daily wellbeing is inseparable from the health of our environment, making human health a priority for our ‘why’ for what we do here at Sustainable Coastlines by taking care of Papatūānuku 🙌

World Cleanup Day at French Bay, Akaroa was a blas

World Cleanup Day at French Bay, Akaroa was a blast! 🏖️

The gorgeous beach was well looked-after by 13 volunteers who scoured the sand for rubbish. Citizen scientists also conducted a Litter Intelligence survey, contributing to a growing database to inform decision-making that can protect the coastlines of Aotearoa for years to come. The most common items found were glass or ceramic fragments, closely followed by unidentifiable hard plastic fragments.

Big thank you to everyone who came and did their bit for the moana! Cleanup Day doesn’t have to be one day of the year — keep up the positive action in whatever capacity you can 🌊 And keep an eye on our upcoming events, we’ll be ramping up more come summertime especially ☀️

Did you know there is a strong link between spending time in nature and increased mental health? 💚

A survey released by the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand (MHF) in 2018 reports that Kiwis felt a positive impact on their mental health when they spend more time with Papatūānuku — 95% of 1,025 Kiwi surveyed, to be exact!

All the more reason to spend some time during your Wednesday to ‘Be Active’ in nature 🏖️ #FiveWaysFiveDays

🐋 Manawatū-Whanganui, Wednesday 27 September, 12–4pm. Join Olivia at Foxton Beach and learn to conduct a Litter Intelligence survey and audit, and contribute valuable data for the health of the moana. RSVP by 20 September to christina.haynes@horizons.govt.nz

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW), which we’re always keen to promote because nature and wellbeing are so interconnected 🐬 This year’s theme is Five Ways, Five Days, a series of simple actions you can take each day of the week to boost your mental health. We love this theme so much, we made our own ocean-related set of actions! Take some time to read through MHAW’s list on their website (link in bio), and check out our list below 🌊🏖️🐚

🐟 Monday: Take notice.
Visit a blue space near you. Science has shown us that being near big, blue spaces correlates with boosted mental health!

🦈 Tuesday: Give.
Volunteer your time to pick up litter, or even donate to fund our mahi to keep our beaches clean.

🐋 Wednesday: Be active.
Walk or run, or do some yoga on the beach. Go on a litter scavenger hunt, a birdwatching trip, or hit the water: surf, kayak, swim, snorkel — there’s no end to the things you can do at the beach to get your heart pumping!

🐠 Thursday: Connect.
The beach is a great meet-up spot! Grab your reusable cup and have a coffee by the sea, have dinner at the beach with your friends or whānau, or organise a game on the sand.

🐬 Friday: Keep learning.
There are plenty of new activities you can try that involve the beach — just re-read our ideas for Wednesday! The beach is also a perfect spot for reading, so you can learn about something new.
