Event impacts

Thank you to all who got stuck in and made this planting possible!

The Waitakaruru stream was full after a week of rain, but we were lucky that the rain held off until the last plants were in the ground! Continuing on from plantings earlier this winter, the fenced banks were planted to establish a riparian margin, which helps to stabilise the banks and filter sediment from entering the water.

In order for these native seedlings to become established trees we will need to return to manage weeds and pests, so please keep an eye on our events page for return maintenance days!

A big thanks again to the support from Simplicity and The Tindall Foundation, along with Trust Waikato, who’ve helped collaboratively fund our efforts. Also a huge thank you to the support of the Piako Catchment Forum, and for the volunteer support from the Green S Welfare Team, Telfer Young crew and Student Volunteer Army.

Thank you to all the awesome volunteers that came along to help us plant in Te Atatu and celebrate Matariki together.

We had a great day with the Te Atatu Marae coalitions workshops, planting native seedlings, weeding and mulching! And we came together at the end for some delicious shared kai.

Event impacts

The volunteers knocked it out of the park at the last Puhinui Stream Matariki planting hosted by Auckland Council as part of the Mayor’s Million Trees programme! Collectively, 12,500 trees were planted at Tootara Park over two days (30th June and 2nd July), where the Te Puhinui / Puhinui Stream begins!  A collection of high resolution photos from 30th June and the 2nd July can be found here & here (respectively).

Our ANZ Love Your Water Planting Series 2022 event in Ōtautahi Christchurch was tree-mendous!

It was the first planting event of the season down by the Waimakariri River and along with our collaborators Environment, we were eager to see the Regional Park visited by some new faces.

On a crisp Winter’s morning, 22 eager volunteers picked up shovels and tirelessly put 824 trees in the ground. This was a huge effort, averaging 37 trees per person.

Mingimingi (Coprosma propinqua) and Harakeke (Phormium tenax) led the way as the most abundant species planted followed by 16 other trees native to Aotearoa New Zealand. A bounty of biodiversity!

With some warm pumpkin soup courtesy of Pulp Kitchen Catering and refreshing drinks by Phoenix in their bellies, we bid the volunteers goodbye for now with the seedlings nestling into their new, earthy home.

Event impacts

This was the final planting event for the year as we move into hotter summer conditions and what an impactful way to wrap up the planting season!

We had 45 people contributing to the planting of just over 2000 plants in Papakōwhai Reserve in Porirua where Paremata and Papakōwhai school had also previously contributed to the planting of natives. Most attendees live locally and can now watch as the natives planted in the tidal zone and surrounding banks grow into maturity like the surrounding established kōwhai and mānuka trees.

A big thank you to ANZ and Wellington Community Trust for sponsoring the event and for the collaboration of Porirua City Council. Again thank you to all who got stuck in, especially on the harder banks where dedicated locals rallied to get the final plants in! We’re looking forward to continuing to work together at planting days next year.

Event postponed.

Thanks for your interest in attending! As you’ll be aware, due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, no public events can take place, so this event has been postponed until further notice. If you’ve already registered, we’ll send you an email to update you once we have a new date or if we have to cancel the planting. We’ll also update our events page and social channels with new announcements.

We need nature and nature needs us, so we’re looking forward to seeing you at our next planting event and getting those seedlings into the ground!

Event impacts

Its always difficult to perfectly plan how many trees will be planted at each planting, and when Auckland Council needed help to plant their final 3,000 trees, along with our sponsor Corona, we leapt into action.

Again this day was a collaboration with Kara and Auckland Council, and supported by Mayor’s Million Trees Programme.

The 3,000 trees were infilling an old planting site planted four years ago, which unfortunately had some inquisitive sheep sneak through a culvert and munch some of our trees a few years back. Most of the trees were canopy trees. The already established manuka and ti kouka trees give protection from the elements to help these larger but more fragile trees have a better chance to grow.

Local group Shah Satnam Ji Green S Welfare Force Wing provided an awesome vegan curry and chai tea to reward the 100 hard working volunteers.

Thanks to all those who came out to help on the day, see you at the next one!
