About the Litter Intelligence Programme

Working in collaboration with the Ministry for the Environment, Statistics New Zealand and the Department of Conservation, we have developed a national beach litter monitoring programme that will enable us to build an accurate picture of the beach litter problem in New Zealand and help to prioritise solutions.

By working to a United Nations Environment Program survey methodology, the data is collected at the highest standard of scientific rigour, allowing it to be used for national, regional and international reporting, including progress against UN Sustainable Development Goals.

To collect the beach litter data long-term, we work with community groups & organisations to conduct beach litter surveys across Aotearoa at least four times per year. We provide the training and tools required to take part in this project as Citizen Scientists, conducting regular litter surveys at their chosen local beach sites and loading the litter data into a new, easy to use nationwide beach litter Citizen Science Platform/App we’ve developed specifically for the project. The Litter Intelligence litter data base also includes a solutions data base and some awesome litter data visualisation tools that are in development at present. All the litter data collected is freely available to the groups involved as well as to the wider public and decision makers.

Interested in setting up your own site but can’t make the event? Please complete this form and we’ll reach out.

Join us on Wednesday the 14th October from 9am-3pm at at the New Plymouth Surf Riders Club, Fitzroy Beach Reserve. to learn more about our Litter Intelligence Education Programme (LIEP), and the litter survey.

This workshop is free to anyone interested in our project-based environmental education programme.

Backed by the Ministry for the Environment, Sustainable Coastlines is in the roll-out stage of a project to create grassroots solutions to litter in Aotearoa. As part of this project, we are offering a free engagement day to describe the programme in detail to teachers, educators and interested parties.

Numbers are limited, so please register via the form below.

Litter is a major risk to people, culture, environment and economy, especially when it enters the marine environment. This is a problem we can – and will – solve. Led by charity Sustainable Coastlines, the Litter Intelligence programme collects data, provides insights and inspires action for a litter-free Aotearoa. As New Zealand’s first national litter database, Litter Intelligence is helping build a better understanding of the problem.

To collect and input this litter data long-term, Sustainable Coastlines is engaging with communities around Aotearoa, providing the training, equipment and technology required for people to take part in the programme as ‘Citizen Scientists’. By working to a United Nations Environment Program / Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission methodology, data is collected at the highest standard of scientific rigour, allowing it to be used for national, regional and international reporting, including the relevant Sustainable Development Goals.

We are training and supporting educators around Aotearoa to deliver an exciting new and innovative litter reduction education programme called the Litter Intelligence Education programme or LIEP for short. By combining evaluation of our education programme with on-the-ground litter data, we will measure the effectiveness of education and a range of other litter-reduction interventions, giving us a strong understanding of the best solutions.

All programme findings are freely, openly and publicly available through our purpose-built Litter Intelligence digital platform, giving politicians and business leaders, educators and students, scientists and researchers the right information to take action for a litter-free world.
