Lantern Rangitoto Island Coastal Clean-up – July | Sustainable Coastlines

Event Details

We have teamed up with Lantern Insurance to perform a series of cleanups at different locations around Rangitoto Island. This is providing extremely valuable information in planning for a huge event out there in December.

On Friday the 2nd of July we were blown away with the enthusiasm and energy that the Lantern crew showed and we were proud to work alongside them. In difficult terrain, with massive concentrations of rubbish, 10 of us removed 250 kilos (or 2,000 litres) of rubbish in one day!

Apart from rubbish, we also collected data on concentrations of rubbish and planned for our December event using GPS coordinates. We are very much looking forward to working with the Lantern Insurance team in the next events we have planned.

This Friday 19 November, another ten crew from Lantern Insurance hit the shores of Rangitoto Island in the third of a series of clean-ups on the challenging shores of this uninhabited island. Volunteers worked hard along rocky coastlines to remove around 950 litres of rubbish from the coast north of McKenzie Bay.

This event played an important part in the planning and build-up to the upcoming Love your Coast clean-up on Rangitoto Island on Monday 6 December. Along with picking-up trash we collected data on trash concentrations, beach entry points, landing sites and terrain types: valuable planning information.

A huge thanks to the volunteers from Lantern Insurance for rolling-up your sleeves and giving a little back to our coastlines, and cheers to Ben Harris from the Waitemata Harbour Clean-up Trust for logistical support in getting us around the island on boat The Phil Warren.

Whoop! The time has come to set-up an HQ in Auckland, so we’re damn keen to celebrate our arrival in Upper Queen.

We’re getting all of our friends together for a combined Office Warming, Christmas Party and Volunteer Thanks party. This will be a great way to celebrate the massive year to date and give huge kudos to all the awesome people who have helped us look after our coastlines.

Dress: Pirate and Mermaid dress-up theme, aaaaaarrrrg! Entry by koha. Oh, and the party’s R18, sorry kids! Pretty please, RSVP

There will be a list of names on the door, so either flick us an email at [email protected] with ‘I wanna party’ in the subject line or just do the old RSVP on Facebook.

A massive thank you to the 1,200 awesome volunteers, school students and supporters who came out to Rangitoto Island to pick up trash yesterday! Thanks to the generous support of Fullers Ferries and the old Auckland City Council our ferry transfers to Rangitoto Island were free for all volunteers! All of the rubbish was transported from the island back to Auckland city straight after the event and has been sorted, counted through and weighed. Check out the results on the right hand side of this page.
