About the Litter Intelligence Programme

Working in collaboration with the Ministry for the Environment, Statistics New Zealand and the Department of Conservation, we have developed a national beach litter monitoring programme that will enable us to build an accurate picture of the beach litter problem in New Zealand and help to prioritise solutions.

By working to a United Nations Environment Program survey methodology, the data is collected at the highest standard of scientific rigour, allowing it to be used for national, regional and international reporting, including progress against UN Sustainable Development Goals.

To collect the beach litter data long-term, we work with community groups & organisations to conduct beach litter surveys across Aotearoa at least four times per year. We provide the training and tools required to take part in this project as Citizen Scientists, conducting regular litter surveys at their chosen local beach sites and loading the litter data into a new, easy to use nationwide beach litter Citizen Science Platform/App we’ve developed specifically for the project. The Litter Intelligence litter data base also includes a solutions data base and some awesome litter data visualisation tools that are in development at present. All the litter data collected is freely available to the groups involved as well as to the wider public and decision makers.

Event impacts

The day started bright and early with a beautiful sunrise and the good vibes continued throughout our Seaweek Celebration! Enthusiastic volunteers tried their hand at a Litter Intelligence audit, getting insight into what it’s like to be a citizen scientist, before going for a paddleboard!

We are super grateful to MERC who invited us along to be a part of the day! It was great to be there alongside Revive Our Gulf and Drowning Prevention Auckland.

Event impacts

This years Great Big Waterfront Clean-up saw over 120 volunteers get stuck in to clean 1.5km of the Wellington Waterfront. Approximately 1,500 litres of litter was removed with a shopping trolley, 3x Flamingo E-scooters, road cones, a doll’s head and lots of cigarette buts and single-use beverage and food containers removed.
Ghost divers rescued a baby octopus from a coke can whilst cleaning up, which was a wonderful reminder that their actions were preventing this litter form entering into the harbour waters and potentially being ingested by these creatures.
There are so many great cafes and restaurants that you can sit in and enjoy the harbour views or that allow you to bring your own container for takeaway, directory here, so that you aren’t generating rubbish whilst enjoying the beauty of of waterfront that the people of Wellington love and our marine life calls home.

Event impacts

What an awesome evening we had cleaning the coastline of Takapuna! The weather was balmy and sunny, a perfect evening in between the two storms Tāmaki Makaurau faced.  There seemed to be noticeably more rubbish on the coast due to the floods!

Huge thank you to the mahi of all who attended as we were able to make a positive impact on our coastlines!
