Totara Park was the last planting site in our Puhinui Catchment of the ANZ LYW Tour 2021. Much like the Puhinui Reserve planting, Totara Park is council land (old farm land) and was lead by Kara and Auckland Councils Mayor’s Million Trees Programme who paid for the trees. NZ Bio laid out all the trees and made the kai for the hungry volunteers.
Over the course of two days, 660 volunteers from all over Auckland came to roll up their sleeves and plant a lot of trees.
Students from Randwick Park School made up the bulk of the planters on Thursday, who certainly kept the Sustainable Coastlines and Council staff on their toes. Other groups who attended the public planting day on the Saturday include: DHL, local scout groups and Shah Satnam Ji Green S Welfare Force Wing.
This retired farm land is now planted with over 11,000 natives and will create an awesome experience for the mountain biking track that runs through it. Totara, manuka, tī kōuka, makomako, karamu, koromiko, harakeke, rautahi and whauwhaupaku were the main species planted.
Thanks to all those who came out to help on the day, see you at the next one!
