Join us at 9.30am on Saturday 21 November on the Wellington Waterfront for a day of scuba diving and kayak-based clean-up. The dive site will be on the wharf next to Frank Kitts Lagoon and dive brief will be at 10am – those who miss the dive brief will not be able to dive.

Last year was a huge effort and this year we’re making a day for the whole family with diving, kayaking, face painting, education and music! Both Department of Conservation and the university biologists will be on site picking the marine life out of the debris and identifying the critters we find. Anyone can help. We need volunteers for all the activities below.

Divers

Please contact one of the following local dive groups to join with a dive team: Island Bay Divers (04-383 6778), Dive Wellington (04-939 3483), Wellington Underwater ClubDive & Ski HQ (04-568 5028), 99 Crew.

We need to make sure everyone is safe and up to par for scuba diving, so please contact one of the groups above and say you’re interested in joining a dive team for the harbour clean-up. You will need to bring all your own gear for diving. Dive Master(s) will give dive safety briefing and supervise divers. Dives will be registered through the local dive clubs and must have prior dive clean up experience. Please bring your own catch-bags, but we will have some spare onion bags as back up.

Snorkelers

Snorkelers and free-divers are invited to join the clean-up and focus on Frank Kitts Lagoon.  Please register via form below and be available for the dive briefing at 10am near the boat shed.

Wharf cleaners

Anyone on foot can join too. Our foot soldiers can clean up the litter from under the wharf – gardening gloves and sturdy shoes are essential and a head torch would help too. Please register via form below.

Kayakers

Kayakers are essential for diver support to help retrieve the rubbish as the divers pass up the bags. If you would like to join us please bring your own kayak and life jacket, there will be a limited number of kayaks for use on the day supplied by Ferg’s Kayaks.  Please register via form below.

Location

Frank Kitts Lagoon, near the pedestrian bridge & boathouse, Wellington waterfront.

What a great day! With wind and rain forecast in the morning, the day turned out beautifully. Together we got over 800 native plants and trees in the ground on Raglan’s harbourside Kaitoke Peninsula. We had help from over 40 students from Raglan Area School, and the tenacious staff from Meridian Energy who helped the students as well as cooked up a storm!

The plants were all grown on site, under the supervision of Angela Prain and we extend huge thanks to all the teachers, students, volunteers and workers involved in the ongoing restoration of this area.

As part of the ongoing nature of this project, the Raglan Area School students ‘Tangata Tiaki’ committee was formed and after hearing their ideas of how to develop this area, we are confident that it is in good hands for many years to come – there are innovative and exciting projects in the works. This is a community that truly loves it’s water and shows what commitment, collaboration and a bit of good old-fashioned hard work can do!

As part of our 2015 Love your Water campaign we invite you to join us for a day of tree planting at the Raglan Peninsular on Friday 11 September 2015. This will continue the planting and weeding for the long term restoration project of Raglan Area School’s peninsular in collaboration with Meridian Energy.

Since 2009 our experienced staff have delivered over 300 events, motivating tens of thousands of volunteers to remove over a million litres of rubbish from the coast, and to plant thousands of trees alongside our waterways. Now we are looking for people to help us run tree planting or cleanup events across the nation.

As part of our Love Your Water Tree Planting and Training campaign, we would you to join us for our Event Management Workshop in Whangarei. The workshop will be held on Wednesday 2 September, 6.30pm to 8.30pm in Room F410 at the NorthTec Whangarei Campus.

See a campus map by clicking here.

Please come in at Gate 2 (main entrance) and park near the library (E block). Then walk up to the F block area. Room F410 is a standalone classroom near the back car park.

This two-hour workshop is free to attend and involves a multimedia presentation and interactive training session, during which we provide an insight into our experience motivating over 40,000 volunteers during clean-ups, tree-planting events and fundraisers. Drawing from our combined knowledge, this workshop focuses on the key skills needed for running successful events and passes on tips and techniques for attendees to deliver their own events.

This workshop is designed to inspire and enable those looking to take the next step in looking after your local waterway or beach.

We would love to see you there.

School clean-ups and education

Schools registration is now closed. Thanks for your interest in Love your Coast Wellington 2015. Due to a huge response almost all of term four is now booked. There are a few days still available in late October, so please contact [email protected] directly if you and your school are still interested in this programme.

Since 2010 we have delivered our Love your Coast programme each year at schools around the Wellington region, with incredible results. This summer, we are once again coordinating this popular beach clean-up and education tour and would love to invite schools around the region to be involved. See the fun from last year here.

Anytime during Term 4 — Monday 12 October to Friday 11 December 2015 — we are offering schools across all year groups the opportunity to be a part of Love your Coast Wellington 2015 by receiving an educational presentation and/or an organised clean-up of your local coastline or waterway at no cost.

Our experienced presenters will visit schools and using imagery, short films and a dynamic presentation, we will build an understanding about the challenges of litter and motivate students to work hands on to look after their local stretch of coast.

We will also coordinate clean-up events for schools and provide rubbish sacks, gloves and Health and Safety equipment for cleaning up the coast, all at no cost. Transport for your event must be organised and paid for by the school.

Presentations and clean-up activities are open to every school in the Kapiti, Hutt Valley, Wellington and Wairarapa regions but places are limited so register now to secure your school’s participation.

We will provide (at no cost to schools):

  • An organised beach clean-up with our first aid trained staff, including rubbish audit and disposal.
  • All equipment required (gloves, sacks, first aid kits, hi-visability vests for leaders, a RAMs and Health and Safety plan).
  • Student consent forms: Download here.
  • Risk Analysis and Management System (RAMS) information: Download here.
  • Excellent online promotion of your school’s involvement.

Over the last six years our team has motivated 42,189 people to remove over 1 million litres of rubbish from the coast, and delivered educational presentations to more than 112,500 school students with exceptional results. See below for testimonials.

Last year over 3,000 proud people from the region participated in clean-up events and over 5,000 attended our educational talks. This year is set to be even better!

Evaluation Surveys

So that we can provide our programmes at no cost to schools, we ask that your students complete our Evaluation Surveys. These are a series of quick surveys that help us understand the effectiveness of our education and outdoor activities. More information on this study can be found here.

Sponsorship

We’re also looking for caring corporates to get behind the project. Check out our event sponsorship opportunities below to see how your organisation can help out.

Throughout the project, the Sustainable Coastlines team will be visiting schools, businesses and community groups to build an understanding about the challenges of litter and motivate Wellingtonians to look after their coastline. During this time we will deliver educational presentations and coordinate tailored coastal clean-up activities with local schools and organisations that support the idea of looking after our coast.

We need to raise funds to cover essential logistical, Health and Safety, transport and training costs, and sponsorship is crucial to ensure this project’s success.

We offer sponsors:

  • A tailored team building beach clean-up with your staff, planned and led by Sustainable Coastlines. This includes our multimedia educational presentation to motivate your staff to get involved. We bring all equipment including a barbecue, however additional hard costs may apply for food and transport (depending on numbers and location).

Thank You so much for coming to the Whitebait Connection / Love your Water Tree planting at the Balmoral Reserve

What a great day.  Around 20 hardy volunteers braved the weather and got more than 800 native plants in the riparian zone – a HUGE thanks to Kim Jones and the Whitebait Connection team for their organisation of the day.  Thanks also to Jolt Cafe and Phoenix Organics who supplied us with delicious scones, muffins and drinks for the day – they also helped us with the recycling!
We hope to keep partnering with Whitebait Connection in the future, and we’re really looking forward to being involved again next year!
Many thanks and stay in touch!
Oliver

Time changed to 12 noon! Weather update: We are going to push the start of this planting back to 12 noon – but we’re still on! The worst of the rain should be gone by midday, but please dress accordingly – gum boots and waterproofs will be pretty essential so please come prepared for wet ground and rain. The trees will love it!

As part of our 2015 Love your Water campaign we invite you to join us for a day of tree planting at the Balmoral Reserve on Saturday 5 September 2015. This will be the final planting in a restoration project of over 3km of waterway from the Whangarei Falls to the Balmoral Reserve, run by the Whitebait Connection Team, with support from the Waitaua Catchment Restoration Network, Northland Regional Council, Whangarei District Council, Foundation North and the Department of Conservation!

Simply meet by the bridge on the corner of Vinegar Hill Rd and Balmoral Rd, Tikipunga. There is parking on Balmoral Road and the planting will be signposted from there. We’ll be starting from 10.00am and finishing up around 4:00pm. You can stay for as little or as long as you like, but afterwards we’ll all come together for some scones and Phoenix Organics’ Drinks.

Volunteers, corporate groups and schools are all welcome to come along and get your hands dirty, give some love to previous plantings, and help the regeneration of this beautiful stream.
